It’s a good thing for the New England Patriots and star tight end Rob Gronkowski there’s an extra week before the Super Bowl.
As Patriots practice began Friday, Gronkowski was not present according to reporters there . It’s possible Gronkowski joined the team after the media portion of practice was over, but that’s doubtful. Gronkowski was knocked out of the AFC championship game due to a concussion on a big hit from Jacksonville Jaguars safety Barry Church. Gronkowski’s status for Super Bowl LII against the Philadelphia Eagles might be the biggest game-related story of next week.
That Gronkowski hasn’t practiced yet this week doesn’t mean he won’t be able to play in the Super Bowl, but it’s hard to predict with concussions. Six years ago, Gronkowski played in a Super Bowl against the New York Giants despite a high ankle sprain. This isn’t the type of injury that Gronkowski can play with despite the pain. If he’s not cleared, he won’t play.
While the Patriots have posted a good record without Gronkowski through the years, it should be obvious that New England is better with him. Gronkowski is perhaps the most dominant tight end in NFL history. There haven’t been any signs Gronkowski won’t play in the Super Bowl, but until he’s cleared there will be some concern.
