INDIANAPOLIS – For New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, Sunday's victory means he has acquired not only a second Super Bowl ring – but also an embarrassing superstition that he will find it hard to shake.
Tisch watched the Giants' thrilling 21-17 triumph over the New England Patriots at Lucas Oil Stadium with all of his toenails painted red or blue, courtesy of his young daughters Elizabeth and Holden.
The 62-year-old businessman and film producer allowed his children to paint his nails as a joke five weeks ago, and was too superstitious to remove the polish as the Giants began to power their way through the playoffs.
"If this is how it is going to work out then maybe I should wear it all the time," Tisch joked. "I was going to get rid of it but my daughters thought it was funny and then we just kept winning.
"One foot is red and one is blue. Each of my daughters did one foot. Of course, all the credit for this has to go to our players, coaches and fans, but hey, if this brings us a little bit of luck, why not?
"I will probably give the toenails a break over the summer, but if we need a little extra in the future, why not?"
Yahoo! Sports Radio: Giants co-owner John Mara on latest Super Bowl win]
Tisch inherited his share in the Giants, which he co-owns along with John Mara, upon the death of his father, Bob, in 2005. He and Mara accepted the Vince Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night, and admitted that proving wrong the doubters that had written off his team midway through the season was deeply satisfying.
"So many people thought we couldn't do this," Tisch said. "They thought we were done, we couldn't get here and we couldn't win. But here we are and we did it.
"It is a great triumph for this time and this group of players to be able to stand up and say they carried on believing, carried on fighting and came out on top. This is a special day and this is a special team."
Tough as nails, and decked out in red and blue.
