Riverside County Department of Animal Services impounds 37 dogs from Cathedral City home

Riverside County Department of Animal Services impounded 37 dogs on Wednesday after a Cathedral City man reached out for help.

Animal services spokesperson John Welsh said the man had a total of 37 chihuahua mixes, ranging from young to seniors, including one pregnant dog, at his rental house. The amount of dogs was over the legal limit he could own on the rented property.

The department impounded the dogs, including four that the man planned to keep. Two of the dogs will be kept in the department's care due to medical conditions. The other dogs will be taken by a Nevada rescue organization Never Forgotten Animal Society, which will foster and adopt out the dogs.

The county will assist with spaying/neutering, vaccinating and chipping the four dogs, using funds by the Healthy Pet Funds, which is grant money the county receives to offer assistance with animal services such as spaying/neutering, vaccinations and chips.

"Our sentiment is we are very grateful to have quite a number of rescue organizations that we can reach out to and get help pretty much right away. It's always great when we can essentially impound these dogs and their time in the shelter is less than a day," Welsh said. "We have more than 400 rescue organizations that are active participants with us."
