Rio Vista captures first district title in almost 20 years

Feb. 16—The Rio Vista Eagles basketball team put together a historic 2023-24 campaign after capturing its first district title in nearly 20 years. The Eagles (22-10, 10-0) won District 12-2A Region II without dropping a single district contest each of their 10 contests against league foes by double digits.

Rio Vista went 12-12 through a challenging pre-district schedule that featured numerous matchups against larger schools. Nonetheless, the Eagles competed well and earned wins over the likes of Callisburg, Comanche, Grandview and Scurry-Rosser along the way.

To open up district play, Rio Vista recorded a 64-36 victory at Valley Mills, and the Eagles followed that triumph with 12- and 11-point wins over Frost and Itasca, respectively.

Rio Vista concluded the first half of district play with a pair of road wins at Itasca (42-31) and Hamilton (58-36). Through their first five district games — four of them coming on the road — the Eagles outscored their district foes 302-211.

Rio Vista continued its winning ways in the second half of competition inside of District 12-2A Region II five more blowout wins over the same slate of schools by an average margin of 29.2 points per victory.

The Eagles roster features four seniors in Filippo Bencetti, Blaine Briscoe, Hunter Henslee and Shamar Richburg. Briscoe has led the team in scoring this year with 12.7 points per game while The 6-foot-5 Richburg has posted 17 double-doubles and has averaged 4.6 blocks per contest.

Now, the Eagles — in the postseason for the fourth year in a row — will face off against De Leon in the bi-district round. The first-round playoff contest will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Mineral Wells High School.
