Richard Sherman jogs on field for first time since Achilles tear, expects to be ready for training camp
San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman jogged on a field Wednesday for the first time since tearing his Achilles in November and expects to be ready for training camp with his new team this summer, per ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

Richard Sherman signed a three-year deal with the 49ers in March
After having to throw against him twice a year for six years while Sherman played for the division-rival Seattle Seahawks, the 49ers inked Sherman, 30, to a three-year deal. The three-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler tore his Achilles in early November, and the Seahawks — who have lost many members of the formerly fearsome “Legion of Boom” defense — decided it was time to move on. Sherman is returning to his home state of California and will play near Stanford University, where he played college ball.
Sherman picked off the 49ers four times as a member of the Seahawks, the second-most picks he has against any team. He has seven interceptions against another NFC West foe, the Cardinals.
A great fit for the 49ers
Though San Francisco was pretty solid against the pass in general last season, the team finished with just 10 interceptions, tied for 24th in the league, and no player had more than two picks. Sherman, meanwhile, has averaged five picks per healthy season and led the league with eight in 2013.
Further than his on-field actions, though, Sherman will be a vocal leader for a relatively young 49ers team. Sherman is one of just seven players currently on the roster who are in their 30s, and the secondary features several players younger than 25. For a young team that won five straight games with midseason acquisition QB Jimmy Garoppolo to close out the season, Sherman’s playoff experience and leadership could provide invaluable.
Training camp opens in July
Though exact dates for the 49ers haven’t been set yet, most teams start training camp in mid- to late-July, and Sherman fully expects to be ready to go, though he acknowledged the team will likely be “overly cautious.” It’s a smart decision for the 49ers to bring Sherman along slowly given where he is in his career, and Sherman seems ready to accept that plan. The 49ers open the preseason on August 9 against the Cowboys and open the regular season at Minnesota exactly one month later.
