Rex Ryan on Jets head coach Todd Bowles: 'He's gone'

You use a thief to catch a thief, and you use a former coach of the woeful New York Jets to comment on the, yep, still-woeful New York Jets.

Rex Ryan appeared on ESPN’s “Get Up” on Monday morning to break down the broken-down Jets in the wake of New York’s 41-10 (!) loss to Buffalo (!!), and ol’ Rexy didn’t hold back:

“You don’t just go out there and lay your jock on the field like they did here,” Ryan said, per SI. “There was one or two guys playing with any frickin’ fire and all that. This was awful.”

Ryan teed off on both head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan, suggesting that both knew they were dead men walking, career-wise. “I love the fact you’ve got the GM sitting and saying, talking about the future and that’s all he talks about — the future,” Ryan said. “What future do you have? You honestly think you have? Because I look at [it] this way … Look, the Johnsons are unbelievable people and they’re going to give you the benefit of the doubt. Todd Bowles is not gonna get fired now, he’s gonna coach the rest of the season. Why? That’s the appropriate way to do things. But we know he’s gone. Todd knows he’s gone. So is the GM.”

‘They’re gonna blow it up’

Despite the debacle on Sunday, reports Monday suggested that Bowles would get the benefit of the doubt for the remainder of the year. But after that? Burn it all down, baby. “They’re gonna blow it up,” Ryan said. “I hope they get it right, bring somebody in who understands the community, gets that kind of passion, can relate to the fanbase and all that, and never ever have a performance like this again.”

Ryan noted that he believes the franchise has a bright future because of Sam Darnold at quarterback, but there’s a lot of garbage between here and success for the Jets. As long as we’ve got Rex bringing the heat, though, it’ll be worth watching.
