Freshmen Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett of Duke headline the 2019 college basketball All-American team announced Tuesday. Murray State guard Ja Morant, Tennessee forward Grant Williams and Michigan State point guard Cassius Winston round out the team.
USWNT gets 'equal pay' bump from LUNA Bar
LUNA Bar said Tuesday it will pay the 23 members of the U.S. 2019 Women's World Cup squad $31,250 each to make up for the disparity in roster bonuses awarded to the men's team. "We knew we had to do something. And do it now," the food company said in a statement. "And let's be clear, this isn't about bravery and determination -- which they rock in abundance. Or even about the money. It's simply because, well, they deserve it."
Texans S Hal, cancer survivor, announces retirement
Houston Texans safety and cancer survivor Andre Hal announced his retirement on Tuesday, saying his decision was not health-related. "One thing I've learned in life is that change is inevitable and life goes through seasons," the 26-year-old wrote on social media. "This season of my life has come to an end. I will be retiring from the NFL."
Reports: AAF suspends operations after just eight weeks
Just eight weeks into its inaugural season, the Alliance of American Football suspended operations Tuesday, league co-founder Bill Polian confirmed. Polian said he was "extremely disappointed" with the decision made by AAF majority owner Tom Dundon, who committed to make a $250 million investment in the eight-team league in February, putting in $70 million at the time.
Wizards dismiss team president Grunfeld
Longtime Washington Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld was dismissed on Tuesday in the wake of the franchise's subpar season, team chairman Ted Leonsis said. Grunfeld, 63, was concluding his 16th season with the franchise and the team holds a disappointing 32-46 record with four games remaining. He was hired prior to the 2003-04 season.
Braves sign Acuna to eight-year, $100 million extension
The Atlanta Braves and 21-year-old outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. have agreed to an eight-year, $100 million contract extension, the team announced on Tuesday. The deal begins this season and is the largest in history for a player with as little major league service time as Acuna (165 days), according to the Braves. He also is believed to be the youngest player to receive a $100 million contract.
Ice hockey: U.S.-based women's league approves plan to expand into Canada
The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) said on Tuesday its board has approved an investment plan to expand into Canada with the goal of having teams in Toronto and Montreal in place for next season. The news comes two days after the Canadian Women's Hockey League, which included teams in Toronto and Montreal, said its business model had proven to be economically unsustainable and that it would cease operations on May 1.
NBA fines three Warriors for ripping refs
The NBA issued a total of $75,000 in fines to three Golden State Warriors players on Tuesday for their criticisms of officials. Forward Draymond Green was fined $35,000 for making statements on social media which "impugned the integrity of NBA officiating," according to the press release from NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe.
Report: Seahawks QB Wilson wants new deal by April 15
Quarterback Russell Wilson has told the Seattle Seahawks that he wants a new contract by April 15, the first day of the offseason workout program, The Seattle Times reported Tuesday. It is believed Wilson's side and the Seahawks have met recently.
