MLB roundup: Sale makes strikeout history in Boston's win
Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a tiebreaking home run in the top of the 10th inning as the visiting Boston Red Sox overcame blowing a five-run lead to beat the Cleveland Indians 7-6 Tuesday night. After the Indians tied the score on Francisco Lindor's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, Bradley's one-out homer off Nick Wittgren (4-1) in the 10th restored the Red Sox's lead.
Kerber knocked out by Estonian Kontaveit in Cincinnati
Estonian Anett Kontaveit ousted German 13th seed Angelique Kerber 7-6(7) 6-2 in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Kontaveit came from 5-3 down and saved a set point at 6-5 on the way to taking the opening set against the former world number one.
NFL notebook: Brown back in Raiders' camp
Oakland Raiders wideout Antonio Brown returned to training camp Tuesday in Napa, Calif., one day after losing his helmet grievance with the NFL. Brown had not been with the team since he left practice early on July 30. The 31-year-old veteran had sought permission to wear his old helmet, which is no longer certified.
Kipchoge likens sub-two hour marathon attempt to moon landing
Kenyan world record holder Eliud Kipchoge says running a marathon in under two hours would be comparable in the annals of human achievement to standing on the moon or scaling Everest for the first time. The 2016 Olympic marathon gold medalist, speaking to reporters from his home training camp in Kaptagat on Wednesday, was sure he too could enter uncharted territory in Vienna on Oct. 12.
Woods ready to play in BMW Championship
Tiger Woods says he is ready to play golf again this week after the former world number one withdrew from last week's Northern Trust due to back pain. Woods arrived on Tuesday at Medinah, Illinois, venue for this week's BMW Championship, and said he would play in the second event of the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Doping: IWF provisionally suspends five Russian weightlifters
Five Russian weightlifters have been provisionally suspended for potential doping violations based on data retrieved from a Moscow laboratory, the sport's governing body has said. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) said it suspended the athletes "in view of the severity of the asserted anti-doping rule violations and compelling nature of the evidence" it received from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Wawrinka sees off determined Dimitrov in Cincinnati
Swiss Stan Wawrinka overcame battling Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 5-7 6-4 7-6(4) in a roller-coaster first-round match at the Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday. Dimitrov clawed back from a double break down in the decider to level at 5-5 and after Wawrinka broke again, Dimitrov forced the tiebreak.
Soccer player Sala and pilot likely exposed to carbon monoxide before fatal crash: report
Argentine soccer player Emiliano Sala's blood showed high levels of carbon monoxide, air accident investigators said on Wednesday, and it was likely the pilot of the plane flying him to Britain had also been exposed before their fatal crash. Sala, 28, was flying from his previous club Nantes in western France to Wales to join Cardiff City when the Piper Malibu aircraft disappeared over the English Channel in January.
Czech Republic handed 2020 Fed Cup wildcard
Eleven-times champions Czech Republic have been handed a wildcard for next April's revamped Fed Cup finals in Budapest, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced on Wednesday. The top ranked Czechs join 2019 finalists Australia and France along with hosts Hungary in securing their places for the April 14-19 claycourt finals.
Semenya says she never felt supported by other women
Double Olympic champion Caster Semenya, who has been locked in a battle over her testosterone levels with athletics authorities, said on Wednesday that she has not felt supported by other women in sport. The South African athlete will not be able to defend her 800-metres title at the world championships in September after the Swiss Federal Tribunal reversed a ruling that temporarily lifted testosterone regulations imposed on her.
