Reports: Jets to hire former Dolphins coach Adam Gase as head coach
The New York Jets are planning to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, ESPN reports.
Gase coached the Dolphins for three seasons before being fired in December. After arriving in Miami in 2016 at 37 years old amid hope that he could help elevate quarterback Ryan Tannehill, Gase left with a 23-25 record that included one wild-card appearance and multiple injuries to Tannehill.

Gase developed a reputation as an offensive guru after finding success as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos during part of the Peyton Manning era and spent 2015 as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator prior to taking the Dolphins job.
Gase had final say over roster decisions in Miami, a luxury he won’t be afforded in New York, according to ESPN. He replaces Todd Bowles, who was fired after compiling a 24-40 record over four seasons.
Jets need to develop quarterback Sam Darnold
With the Jets developing young quarterback Sam Darnold, the team is apparently convinced that Gase, now 40, can push him to be the franchise quarterback they hoped they selected with the No. 3 pick in last April’s draft. Darnold was impressed with Gase after speaking with him, according to the report.
Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, Baylor head coach Matt Rhule and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy were among the candidates the Jets also reportedly considered for the job.
