Russell, 24, has been in and out of Minnesota's lineup this season with what the team has repeatedly deemed "left leg soreness." He's missed the last three games and eight games total this season. Tuesday's news sheds light on the extent of Russell's ailment that the Timberwolves remained vague about.
More bad news for Minnesota
The Timberwolves recently saw the return of All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns after an extended absence with COVID-19. Now, they're losing the guard they hoped would return to All-Star form after acquiring him last season from the Golden State Warriors to play a featured role alongside Towns.
In 20 games this season, Russell has averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 2.6 rebounds, all falling short of his averages in each of the last two seasons that included an All-Star bid with the Brooklyn Nets in 2019.
Minnesota sits in last place in the Western Conference at 7-20 with no reasonable chance of competing for a playoff spot.
