Report: Sam Darnold has 'significant' foot sprain and won't play against Bills

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will reportedly take a seat on the bench after all, but not for the reasons people were speculating about this week.

Darnold, who is coming off a four-interception game, showed up at Wednesday’s practice with a walking boot on his foot. Shortly after, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that Darnold has a “significant” foot sprain and won’t play on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Mehta added that the team isn’t optimistic Darnold will be ready for the team’s game against the Patriots after its Week 11 bye, either.

Josh McCown will presumably get the start, if Darnold does sit. It might not be the worst idea to let the rookie quarterback clear his head.

Sam Darnold’s injury wasn’t known on Sunday

It will be interesting to see when Darnold injured himself. It could explain some of his struggles last week against the Dolphins. In conference calls with reporters Monday, Jets coach Todd Bowles said he wasn’t aware of any injury to Darnold, and Darnold said he felt “fine.”

Darnold leads the NFL with 14 interceptions and has had some extreme rookie ups and downs. After he threw four interceptions in a loss at Miami, there were questions about whether he would be benched. Jets coach Todd Bowles said he wasn’t considering that.

There doesn’t seem to be a choice this week. Darnold will probably be watching McCown from the sideline, maybe for multiple games. It might end up being for the best.
