Report: Andrews had surgery on broken thumb, could miss time originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
David Andrews' hand injury apparently was no minor ailment.
The Patriots' starting center underwent surgery this week on his broken right thumb, FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reported Friday, adding that Andrews likely will miss New England's Week 3 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Big hit for Patriots and Cam as starting center David Andrews broke thumb on his snapping hand and actually had surgery on it this week. Trying to snap with other hand but likely out this week and potentially more @NFLonFOX— Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) September 25, 2020
Andrews returned to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday's session but was wearing a cast on his right hand, which he snaps with. He tried snapping with his left hand early in Thursday's practice but appeared to have some trouble.
As our Phil Perry noted in his Friday Mailbag, Andrews had a wrap on his right hand during the Patriots' Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, so it's possible he was already dealing with a thumb injury and exacerbated it in the game.
Losing Andrews indeed would be a tough blow for New England, which may fill his center spot with second-year player Hjalte Froholdt if he can't suit up Sunday.
