New report: OKC Thunder worth $1.66 billion

A new report shows the value of the Oklahoma City Thunder and how much revenue decreased last year, a season in which the coronavirus outbreak upended the season.

The Thunder franchise is worth $1.66 billion, according to Sportico. That is 22nd in the league, and a full list of the teams’ worths can be found at Rookie Wire.

That’s about 4.75 times more than the the $350 million Clay Bennett and Professional Basketball Club LLC paid to purchase the organization in 2006 when it was the Seattle SuperSonics alongside the WNBA Seattle Storm.

Last year’s Thunder organization did bring in a smaller amount of revenue than the year before. For a number of reasons — primarily the coronavirus, but also potentially from the China fallout and no longer having Russell Westbrook or Paul George — revenue decreased by 8%, according to Sportico.

The organization brought in $257 million last year compared to $280 million in 2018-19.

The New York Knicks, at $5.42 billion, is the highest-valued franchise in the NBA. Behind them is the Golden State Warriors, worth $5.21 billion, and in third is the Los Angeles Lakers at $5.140 billion.

Those are far and away the most valued teams in the league. The next-highest is the Brooklyn Nets at $3.4 billion.

The New Orleans Pelicans, valued at $1.35 billion, is the lowest-valued franchise in the NBA.

On average, franchises are worth $2.4 billion, a decrease of about 2% from a direct result of COVID-19, according to Sportico.
