Report: NHL sues maker of beer mug resembling the Stanley Cup trophy
The NHL filed a lawsuit against the makers of a beer mug that resembles the Stanley Cup, according to a report from the New York Daily News.
The lawsuit — filed Monday in Manhattan Federal Court — was filed against Roger Dewey, the maker of the “The Cup,” per the report. The lawsuit alleges that the beer cups have been on sale since at least 2016, and that Dewey “has tied promotions for the mug to the NHL season, proving that it’s capitalizing off the league’s fame.”
The mug’s Amazon page and the company’s official website do not officially reference the NHL or the Stanley Cup in its description or in any photo shown of the $29.99 mug.
“Now this is a hockey fan’s way to drink beer,” the product description on Amazon reads. “We’ve all dreamed about drinking from ‘The Cup.’ Now you can with your very own 25 ounce Hockey Cup. Tough as the game … made from a clear, break-resistant plexiglass blend, similar to ‘The Glass’ at hockey arenas.
“So lace ’em up, light the lamp and hoist ‘The Cup.'”
