Report: Mets express interest in Colon
Bartolo Colon isn't ready to retire, and the 44-year-old right-hander might have a landing spot.
Right-hander Ervin Santana, Colon's teammate on the Minnesota Twins last year and a decade earlier with the Los Angeles Angels, told the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press on Saturday that the New York Mets are weighing a possible deal with Colon.
"He just wants to win six more games and then he will retire," Santana told the newspaper about Colon.
An additional six victories would push Colon's career total to 246, one more than Dennis Martinez's total. Martinez is baseball's winningest Latin-American pitcher.
Colon made a total of 28 starts for the Atlanta Braves and the Twins last year, his 20th major league season, and he went 7-14 with a 6.48 ERA. Each of the previous five years, he won at least 10 games.
Colon pitched three seasons for the Mets, going 15-13 with a 4.09 ERA in 2014, 14-13 with a 4.16 ERA in 2015, and 15-8 with a 3.43 ERA in 2016.
Last month, the New York Post reported that Colon would be interested in rejoining the Mets, even on a minor league contract.
Colon began his career with the Cleveland Indians and subsequently pitched for the Montreal Expos, the Chicago White Sox, the Angels, the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and the Oakland A's before joining the Mets.
Colon won the 2005 American League Cy Young Award with the Angels, going 21-8 with a 3.48 ERA. For his career, he is 240-176 with a 4.04 ERA in 537 games (528 starts). A four-time All-Star, Colon pitched for a World Series team only once in his career, when his Mets fell to the Kansas City Royals in 2015.
