The Orlando Magic are expected to hire Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley as their next head coach, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports. The report was confirmed by The Athletic's Shams Charania on Sunday.

Mosley, 42, worked seven years on Rick Carlisle's staff in Dallas and emerged as his top lieutenant and associate head coach. Per the report, he developed a strong reputation for player development and built a good relationship with young Mavericks star Luka Doncic.

Player development will be key in Orlando after the Magic signaled a full rebuild with their midseason trades of Nikola Vucevic and Evan Fournier last season. The shift to a rebuild prompted the departure of former head coach Steve Clifford, who left the franchise this offseason on mutual terms with the team.

The Magic look to develop their team around young talent Jonathan Isaac, Chuma Okeke, Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony and Mo Bamba, all of whom are 23 years old or younger.

Denver Nuggets assistant Wes Unseld Jr. was a finalist for the job alongside Mosley, according to the report. Mosley has been an assistant coach in the NBA since he was 28 years old, with stops with the Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers before joining Dallas in 2014.
