Kliff Kingsbury becomes head coach of Arizona Cardinals

Kliff Kingsbury, the former Texas Tech head coach and most recently the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at USC, is the next head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cardinals announced the official hiring on Tuesday afternoon.

Kingsbury replaced Steve Wilks, who was fired by the Cardinals after just one year.

A year is a lot more time than Kingsbury spent at USC. After Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt announced in late November that Kingsbury would not return to the school for a seventh season, Kingsbury was hired by USC on Dec. 5. With the Cardinals reportedly hiring him on Tuesday, his tenure at USC lasted just 34 days.

A report surfaced last week that USC had blocked the Cardinals and the New York Jets from interviewing their brand new offensive coordinator to fill those teams’ head coaching vacancies. But on Monday it looked like USC had reversed course, as several reports had Kingsbury actively interviewing with both the Jets and Cardinals.

Kingsbury has his work cut out for him with the Cardinals. While most people would identify the Oakland Raiders as the biggest mess of the 2018 NFL season, the Cardinals were just as futile, though they were much quieter about it than the Raiders. They stumbled their way into a 3-13 season, and two of their wins came from the similarly uninspiring San Francisco 49ers. There’s nowhere to go but up.
