Report: Houston QB D'Eriq King out for season after knee injury vs. Tulane
Houston’s D’Eriq King, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in the country, will miss Houston’s final games of the season after suffering a knee injury Thursday night against Tulane.
According to the Houston Chronicle, King suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee in the first half. He was replaced by backup Clayton Tune for the second half in the Cougars’ 48-17 win.
“He simply handed the ball off and went to carry out his fake,” coach Major Applewhite said. “It all kind of stunned us, quite honestly, when he said he could not straighten his leg out.”
King is 219-of-345 passing for 2,982 yards with 36 touchdowns and six interceptions. King is the team’s second-leading rusher with 674 rushing yards and has scored 14 rushing touchdowns. He leads the country in passing touchdowns and is tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns. He had one of each Thursday night.
As you can imagine, he’s the only player in college football responsible for 50 touchdowns in 2018. No one else is close. Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray has 39 total touchdowns, while Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa, the Heisman leader, has 31 total scores.
Houston snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over the Green Wave and finishes the season against Memphis. A win over Memphis coupled with an SMU loss over the Mustangs’ next two games would put Houston in the AAC title game.
