One of the top remaining free agents for the Kansas City Chiefs could soon find a new home.

According to The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, Former Chiefs CB Bashaud Breeland spent Thursday in Minneapolis, taking a visit with the Minnesota Vikings at their training facility. This is the first visit for Breeland that has been publicly reported during the course of the free agency period.

Breeland, 29, joined the Chiefs as a free agent ahead of the 2019 NFL season. He signed one-year deals with the team in each of the past two seasons, starting 26-of-27 possible games during that span. He recorded 86 total tackles, four interceptions, 17 passes defended, one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries in Kansas City. One of his highlight moments came in Super Bowl LIV when he intercepted San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

Breeland was suspended for the first four games of the 2020 NFL season due to a violation of the NFL’s Substance Abuse Policy. He was also arrested last April in South Carolina on a variety of charges and it’s unclear if he’ll be disciplined by the league for that incident.

The Chiefs are said to have kept the door open on bringing Breeland back into the fold in 2021, but they recently acquired Vikings CB Mike Hughes in trade. Hughes figures in more as a nickel corner and return specialist as opposed to an outside corner, so that move shouldn’t preclude a return for Breeland. He might not see it that way, though.

Kansas City is certainly a better team with Breeland in the fold, but if they were to lose him to the Vikings, the cupboard isn’t bare. Charvarius Ward and L’Jarius Sneed are penciled in as starters right now, with Hughes potentially filling in at nickel. Rashad Fenton has proven to be solid depth. DeAndre Baker and BoPete Keyes are promising young players. They also added a few wild cards in undrafted free agency with Marlon Character, Dicaprio Bootle and Manny Patterson.
