Capitals pick up depth forward Michael Raffl from Philadelphia originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

The Capitals waited right up to the end of the trade deadline, but reportedly picked up depth forward Michael Raffl from the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday. Chris Johnston was the first to report the move, which was later confirmed by the team. The Caps sent a fifth-round pick to Philadelphia in return.

Raffl, 32, has three goals and five assists in 34 games with the Flyers this season and has spent his entire eight-season career with the Flyers. He is a depth winger, but can play center and center depth is a critical need for Washington.

This was shown last year when Nicklas Backstrom was out injured in the first round.

By reassigning Richard Panik to the taxi squad and trading away Jonas Siegenthaler, general manager Brian MacLellan cleared out over $1.8 million worth of cap space prior to the deadline, enough to add Raffl's cap hit is $1.6 million.Download and subscribe to the Capitals Talk podcast
