Report: Broncos QB Drew Lock suffers 'severe' rotator cuff strain, WR Courtland Sutton tears ACL

The fallout from a brutal, injury-filled Sunday just keeps getting worse.

Quarterback Drew Lock reportedly sustained a bad rotator cuff strain against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, and will be out at least two weeks.

Those two weeks could turn into more if Lock gets a bad report on his injury when it’s reevaluated.

In his place, Jeff Driskel will be starting. Driskel had starts for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018 and for the Detroit Lions in 2019. He appeared in 12 total games those years, but in his 8 starts he has a 1-7-0 record. He acquitted himself well on Sunday despite the loss, but now the Broncos’ offense is in his hands.

Courtland Sutton likely out for the year

The bad news didn’t stop there. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton has torn his ACL.

No timeline has been given for his recovery, but he’ll almost certainly miss the rest of the 2020 season.

Sutton injured his knee while making a tackle on a Steelers interception on Sunday. Before he left the game, he had three catches for 66 yards, having missed Week 1 with an AC joint injury. There was significant excitement about Sutton this year after his breakout 2019. He had 1,112 yards on 72 catches with six TDs despite the quarterback carousel.

DE Dre’Mont Jones out 4-6 weeks

But wait, there’s more. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, defensive end Dre’Mont Jones has a PCL strain and bone bruise in his knee and will miss 4-6 weeks while he recuperates.

All these losses are heartbreakers for the Broncos, who are already dealing with significant absences. Lock and Sutton join a list that already contains linebacker Von Miller, who is out for at least the next three months with an ankle injury. The complete list of injured Broncos players is pretty long.

The Broncos need to catch a break with the injuries, because if it keeps going at this pace they’ll have difficulty fielding a team in a few weeks.
