Report: 49ers to release CB Jamar Taylor

The 49ers roster cuts are underway. Matt Barrows of the Athletic reported San Francisco will release cornerback Jamar Taylor as part of their cutdown from 80 players to 53.

Taylor signed after cornerback Teez Tabor was released with an injury. He worked his way into the nickel corner role in camp when K’Waun Williams went down with a calf injury, but he didn’t do enough to earn a roster spot in a relatively crowded group.

The math of the 53-man roster doesn’t leave a ton of wiggle room at cornerback, and the 49ers are likely to only keep five players there. Williams is one, along with Richard Sherman, Ahkello Witherspoon, Emmanuel Moseley and Jason Verrett.

Verrett suffered a low-grade hamstring strain earlier in the week, but the injury wasn’t enough to push the veteran off the roster and open a slot for Taylor.

Taylor has seven NFL seasons under his belt with the Dolphins, Browns, Cardinals, Broncos, Falcons and Seahawks. He has 31 pass breakups and three interceptions. Early word of his release is an indicator that the team doesn’t plan to make him part of their 16-man practice squad.

The 49ers will have to have their roster cut down to 53 players by Saturday at 1:00 pm PST.
