Report: 49ers shopping 2017 first-round pick Solomon Thomas

Just two years ago, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch was a big fan of Solomon Thomas, so much so that he chose Thomas with the No. 3 pick in the 2017 draft.

But after just two seasons, Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan might be ready to part ways with Thomas.

On Thursday, ProFootballTalk’s Mike Florio, citing an NFL source, reported that the Niners are “shopping” Thomas and seeing if there’s a trade to be done.

Thomas’ pass-rushing ability at Stanford made him attractive, but in 30 NFL games he has just four sacks, three of those as a rookie in 2017, and 17 quarterback hits.

San Francisco had two first-round picks in 2017; at No. 31, it selected Reuben Foster. Foster was released last November after an arrest for suspicion of domestic battery, his second domestic violence-related arrest in a year.

Lynch and Thomas were classmates at Stanford a few years ago; Lynch returned to school to take classes toward finishing his degree and was in a Management Science and Engineering class with Thomas, who was a freshman at the time. The two also worked on a project together.

Thomas played through grief in 2018

Thomas played through grief in 2018. His older sister, Ella, committed suicide on Jan. 23, 2018.

The 23-year-old wrote an emotional essay about Ella, his and his family’s experience, and his budding desire to be an advocate for mental health and suicide prevention, for ESPN in September.
