With Stade Rennais facing fourth tier side Le Puy tonight in the Coupe de France quarterfinals, we take a look back at the last time Les Rouge et Noir lifted France's oldest trophy under Julien Stéphan back in 2019

In April 2019, Stade Rennais made their return to the Stade de France in a Coupe de France final appearance for the first time since last being beaten in the 2014 edition by Breton neighbours En Avant Guingamp (2-0). It would be the seventh appearance in the final for Julien Stéphan's side, with an opportunity to lift the famous trophy for a third time. Yet, stood in their way was a star-studded Paris Saint-Germain outfit who had just signed Neymar Jr and 2018 World Cup sensation Kylian Mbappé.

It's all about the journey…

Their journey started in the round of 64, where they had to go to a penalty shootout to beat Breton club Brest 5-4 following a 2-2 draw at Roazhon Park. The next round, Rennes would face amateur outfit Saint-Pryvé Saint-Hilaire and run out 2-0 winners to set up a clash against future Ligue 1 winners LOSC Lille. They managed to beat Christophe Galtier's side 2-1 with a goal in the 91st minute through Jordan Pefok to progress to the quarter finals. They faced lower league US Orléans and beat them easily (2-0) to face Lyon in the semi-final stage.

The destination… Stade de France

The Bretons took the lead twice against Les Gones but were pegged back at 2-2 in the 75th minute, with a late goal from Ramy Bensebaini sealing their progress to the Coupe de France final for the seventh time in their history. A bad start for Rennes saw PSG race into a two-goal lead via Brazilian pair Dani Alves and Neymar, before a Presnel Kimpembe on the 40th minute allowed Rennes back into the game. Edson Mexer would score the decisive leveller on the 66th minute and the final would go to penalties. The Rennais won the shootout against the French capital club 6-5 to lift their third Coupe de France trophy, and qualify for the UEFA Europa League for a third time.
