A 26-year-old woman alleges Jarryd Hayne, the Australian rugby player who played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2015, caused her injury during a Sept. 30 sexual encounter.

On Monday, Hayne turned himself in to police in Sydney, Australia, after being charged with aggravated sexual assault.

Woman alleges Hayne physically harmed her

The alleged victim told authorities that she suffered injuries during an encounter with Hayne, after the National Rugby League Grand Final in Sydney. The woman told police that their sexual encounter was initially consensual.

Hayne spent the night in jail and was charged with aggravated sexual assault-inflicting actual bodily harm after questioning from detectives in the sex crimes squad. He was granted strict conditional bail and must appear in court on Dec. 10.

The criminal code in New South Wales states “circumstances of aggravation” means “the alleged offender intentionally or recklessly inflicts actual bodily harm on the alleged victim.”

The charge carries a maximum 20-year sentence if Hayne is convicted.

Not the first accusation for Hayne

Hayne is facing a federal lawsuit in the United States stemming from an alleged incident when he was with the 49ers.

In that case, San Jose (Calif.) police investigated an allegation in December 2015 that Hayne had raped a woman he knew through mutual acquaintances. The alleged victim said she and some friends met Hayne and his friends at a bar. The woman became intoxicated, and Hayne allegedly brought her back to his apartment, where he raped her.

San Jose police forwarded the case to the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office, but did not press charges, citing insufficient evidence.

The alleged victim has filed a suit against Hayne that is expected to go to trial in 2020; it is a federal suit because Hayne no longer lives in the United States.

Eight games in San Francisco

Hayne played in eight games for the 49ers, with one start. He left the team after one season, saying he didn’t want to learn another playbook when San Francisco hired Chip Kelly.

The 30-year-old spent this NRL season with the Parramatta Eels, the team he left to join the NFL.
