Reds sign LHP Perez to minor-league deal

The Cincinnati Reds signed veteran left-handed relief pitcher Oliver Perez to a minor-league contract on Saturday.

Perez, 35, was invited to spring training in Goodyear, Ariz., as a non-roster player. If he makes the team, he will earn a reported $1.25 million this season with an additional $500,000 possible in performance bonuses.

"I like new teams for the fresh air," Perez said. "The Reds wanted me so I'm excited to be here."

Perez spent the past two seasons with the Washington Nationals. In 2017, he made 50 relief appearances and went 0-0 with a 4.64 ERA in 33 innings. He struck out 39 and walked 12.

He will compete for a bullpen spot as a situational reliever, according to Reds manager Bryan Price.

"We don't have a lot of left-handed relief depth at least of the experienced nature," Price said. "He has a track record of being very, very tough on left-handed hitters. He has really found a niche in that role. He's been durable."

Perez made his debut with the San Diego Padres in 2002 as a starter. He also pitched for Pittsburgh, New York Mets, Seattle, Arizona and Houston before signing with the Nationals for the 2016 season.

Over his major-league career, Perez has a 69-86 record with a 4.46 ERA in 552 games (195 starts).
