Red Sox send reliever Brasier to Pawtucket

Ryan Brasier, who helped solidify the Boston bullpen last season, was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.

Brasier (2-3, 4.24 ERA) has been scored upon in three of his past four appearances, including giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits in two-thirds of an inning Monday night in a 10-8 home win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Brasier, 31, has yielded 37 hits in 40 1/3 innings.

The right-hander was a surprise last season, when he came up in July and went 2-0 with a 1.60 ERA in 33 2/3 innings, pitching in the majors for the first time since 2013 with the Los Angeles Angels. He gave one run in 8 2/3 postseason innings as the Red Sox won the World Series.

Boston recalled rookie left-hander Darwinzon Hernandez from Pawtucket.

The 22-year-old is considered the team's top pitching prospect but has exhibited control issues early in his career. He has made two appearances (one start) over three stints with the Red Sox this season, with an 0-1 record and a 5.06 ERA, striking out 11 and walking six in 5 1/3 innings.
