Red Sox place INF Nunez on 10-day IL

The Boston Red Sox placed infielder Eduardo Nunez on the 10-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to April 18, with a mid-back strain.

The team also designated right-hander Erasmo Ramirez for assignment and recalled infielders Tzu-Wei Lin and Michael Chavis from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Nunez, 31, is batting .159 with five RBIs in 17 games this season.

Ramirez, 28, made his debut for the Red Sox on April 16, giving up four runs in three innings against the New York Yankees. He is an eight-year major-league veteran with a career 32-39 record and 4.40 ERA.

This will be the second stint with the Red Sox this season for Lin, 25. He pinch hit and was retired in the team's 5-4 loss to Arizona on April 6. In seven games in Pawtucket, he has hit .286 with three doubles and three walks.

This is the first callup to the majors for the 23-year-old Chavis, who was selected by the Red Sox in the first round of the 2014 draft. In 12 games with Pawtucket this season, he is batting .250 with four home runs, two doubles and seven walks. He has hit homers in three of his last five games, going 7-for-17 in that time.
