The Boston Red Sox have signed catcher Christian Vazquez to a contract extension through 2021, the team announced on Saturday.
The deal contains a team option for 2022.
"The #RedSox today signed catcher Christian Vázquez to a three-year contract extension through the 2021 season, with a club option for the 2022 season," the team tweeted.
Vazquez, 27, was a ninth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2008, coming out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy.
He made his big league debut in 2014, playing in 55 games and joined the team again in 2016 for 57 games.
But in 2017, he had a breakout season, playing in 99 games and hitting .290 with 18 doubles and 43 runs scored.
Through 211 games, he's thrown out 42 of 100 attempted base-stealers, his 42 percent success rate the highest of any catcher with at least 200 games since 1987.
