When you think about Craig Kimbrel, one of the first things that come to mind is his trademark long red beard. The former Boston Red Sox closer decided it was time for a change. Now with the Chicago Cubs, Kimbrel showed off a clean-shaven look Friday night.
Christian Yelich and Justin Smoak hit long home runs, umpires intervened before a shouting match between the teams got too serious and the Milwaukee Brewers powered past the Chicago Cubs 8-3 on Saturday. Without fans at Wrigley Field, players from both NL Central rivals could be heard shouting toward each other from their dugouts before the start of the fourth inning. All-Star catcher Willson Contreras seemed to be barking the loudest from the warning track in front of the Cubs dugout, and several players from both sides popped out onto dirt near their benches.
Seniesa Estrada wasted no time on Friday night, and added another knockout to her resume in the process. Estrada dominated Miranda Adkins at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California, securing the knockout victory just seven seconds into the fight — one of the fastest knockouts in boxing history. Estrada, the interim WBA flyweight champion and WBC silver junior flyweight champion was initially slated to take on Jacky Calvo on Friday night, though Calvo withdrew due to a knee injury.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady will never be mistaken for a basketball player, but Friday evening he absolutely slammed Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill on Twitter. Hill recently went on ESPN's First Take to talk about his pursuit of a dynasty in Kansas City as they are the defending champs and all. "Why not go seven rings?"
In yesterday's scrimmage, Grizzlies center Jonas Valanciunas got the last laugh. Valanciunas caught the ball wide open behind the arc. In the paint, Embiid just waved off Valanciunas – an improved outside shooter – rather than closing out.
Deere said the president made the journey to Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster to attend a fundraising event at the club on Saturday night hosted by America First Action, a Super Pac which has spent over $540,000 to host events at the Trump's Washington DC hotel, making it a top source of campaign revenues for the hotel and the family's business, according to public data and 1100 Pennsylvania, which tracks Trump hotel events. Favre, who played 17 seasons with the Packers before finishing with the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings, retired in 2010 as the NFL's all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns and quarterback wins.
Six former NFL players have been charged in a superseding indictment for their alleged roles in a nationwide fraud on a healthcare benefits program for retired league players, according to a Department of Justice statement. Among the half-dozen athletes named were two-time Pro Bowl running back Clinton Portis, who ranks No. 25 all-time in rushing touchdowns. The other five ex gridiron greats include Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tamarick Vanover, Tennessee Titans defensive end Antwan Odom, Indianapolis Colts linebacker Darrell Reid, Washington defensive tackle Anthony Montgomery and Baltimore Ravens linebacker Robert McCune.
The Toronto Raptors continue to use their platform to advocate for Black Lives Matter and ending systemic racism as the NBA inches closer towards the resumption of the 2019-20 season. Toronto entered the NBA's bubble in Orlando on July 9 with three busses reading Black Lives Matter in a large font, and the rest of the basketball world certainly took notice. The Raptors continue to do the work and are intent on keeping the focus on Black lives with their season slated to resume on Aug. 1, and part of that work entails clearing up misconceptions when it comes to Black people and systemic racism in Canada.
Within 30 seconds of substituting for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Kuzma sank a three-pointer. Lakers coach Frank Vogel was asked after the game if this version of Kuzma might have appeared at the start of this season had he not missed all of training camp and the first four games because of an ankle injury. “I really believe that,” Vogel said.
After watching Mookie Betts sign a long-term deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox brass isn't budging on the belief they made the right move with the former MVP. Betts signed a 12-year, $365 million extension with the Dodgers earlier this week, causing Sox fans to lament and Dodgers fans to celebrate the February trade all over again. On Friday though, Red Sox chairman Tom Werner issued a reminder to those in L.A. celebrating Betts' mega-deal.
The Dodgers pounded the San Francisco Giants in their first two games of the 2020 season by pouncing on mistakes. The Giants capitalized on bad baserunning and Alex Wood's faulty command to hand the Dodgers their first loss, 5-4, at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers, with no help from poor baserunning, couldn't string together hits until late.
The NFL salary cap usually grows each year. Friday's agreement between the NFL and NFL Players Association guarantees that the salary cap won't drop any lower than $175 million, but even that represents a significant drop from this year's $198.2 million cap. Until a few months ago, most teams were expecting the 2021 cap to grow to somewhere in the neighborhood of $215 million, which means teams have $40 million less to spend next year than they were planning for when they were negotiating many of their players' long-term contracts.
Marcell Ozuna hit a tying homer off shaky closer Edwin Diaz with two outs in the ninth inning, Dansby Swanson scored automatic runner Adam Duvall with a leadoff single in the 10th and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Saturday. New York loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th with no outs against Luke Jackson (1-0). Pinch-hitter Dominic Smith managed a sacrifice fly, but Jackson recovered and retired Wilson Ramos to end it.
Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered one of the more horrific football injuries in recent history in 2018, one that almost cost him his life. Now, nearly two years later, Smith's goal of returning to the NFL is almost a reality. Smith was cleared by his surgical team to return to full football activity on Friday, according to ESPN's Stephania Bell.
James and Anthony Davis played in the first half. James finished with 12 points, five assists and three rebounds in 15 minutes of play. Davis also scored 12 points, with two steals, one assist and one rebound in his 15 minutes of playing time.
Opening Night for the Orioles did not go well. Though expectations are not too high entering the season, a 13-2 blowout loss to the Boston Red Sox showed that the 60-game season will consist of some rather tough showings. For a broadcaster, games like Friday night can be hard to call. Former MLB pitcher and current Red Sox color analyst Dennis Eckersley, who was probably having a better time on Friday, made a joke about the situation on the NESN broadcast.
Paul Goldschmidt homered, Adam Wainwright pitched six solid innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 on Saturday. Wainwright (1-0) pitched out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the second, giving up just one run. ''It's just certainly, especially when you get to be the old owl on the team, things get a little harder as you get older, so you got to figure out ways and tricks, little ways to stay in the game,'' Wainwright said.
The Atlantic Coast Conference and Notre Dame are considering whether the Fighting Irish will give up their treasured football independence to play as a member of the league for the 2020 season that has been thrown into question by the coronavirus pandemic. Two people involved in the ACC's discussions about scheduling for the upcoming season told The Associated Press on Friday the ACC is looking at an 11-game schedule that would include 10 conference games and start Sept. 12. Under the 10-plus-one plan, Notre Dame would play a full ACC schedule, the people told AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because talks are still ongoing and details have not been disclosed.
San Francisco Giants pitcher Sam Coonrod refused to kneel in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement ahead of the team's season opener Friday, saying he would feel “like a hypocrite” because of his Christian faith and personal beliefs. Every player and staff member from the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers joined together to kneel and hold a black ribbon for the moment honoring Black Lives Matter, as did the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals in their game earlier on Friday.
