Real Madrid set new record for longest goal drought in their history
Real Madrid have made history once again – but for all the wrong reasons.
The side have set a new record for the longest goal drought in their 116 years of existence: 481 minutes to be precise.
Having failed to score in their last four games against Sevilla, CSKA Moscow, Alaves and Atletico, it took the European champions 72 minutes to finally find the back of the net in their match against Levante.
The dry spell, broken by Marcelo, surpasses Madrid’s 1985 goal drought.
The unwanted record comes at a time of great scrutiny at the Bernabeu, with manager Julen Lopetegui under rising pressure to turn around his side’s fortunes.
After eight matches, Madrid currently sit fifth in the league on 14 points, having already lost two games this season.
In light of such results, Antonio Conte has been touted as a replacement to Lopetegui, whose days in the Spanish capital look to be numbered.
