Reading High, Berks Catholic and Muhlenberg earn wins in Berks boys basketball quarterfinals

Feb. 13—No. 2 Reading High 78, No. 7 Schuylkill Valley 40

Berks County's leading scorer continued to produce on Monday night, as senior Yadiel Cruz scored a game-high 29 points to help lead Reading High over Schuylkill Valley in a Berks Boys Basketball Conference quarterfinal at the Geigle.

With the win, the Red Knights (16-7) will take on sixth-seeded Muhlenberg in a semifinal on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Santander Arena. The game will be preceded by a semifinal matchup between top-seeded Berks Catholic and No. 4 seed Wilson at 7 p.m.

Against the Panthers (15-6), Cruz scored 11 points in the first half as the Red Knights carried a 35-20 lead into the halftime locker room. He scored 15 points, including two 3-pointers, to help Reading High outscore Schuylkill Valley 32-12 in the third quarter.

Freshman Jeremiah Camara and senior Malik Osumanu each scored 13 points for Reading High.

Junior Kowen Gerner scored a team-high 11 points for Schuylkill Valley.

No. 6 Muhlenberg 60, No. 3 Fleetwood 46

Muhlenberg leading scorer Shermar Killen scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Muhls over Fleetwood on Monday night in a Berks Boys Basketball Conference quarterfinal at Fleetwood.

Muhlenberg senior Alex Collado made a game-high four 3-pointers, with three coming in the first quarter, to help the Muhls take a 19-14 lead after eight minutes.

Muhlenberg (14-8) outscored Fleetwood 13-8 in the second quarter. A junior, Killen scored 12 points in the first half and 11 points in the second half.

Senior Aiden Soumas scored a team-high 17 points for the Tigers (19-3), with eight coming in the first half. Fleetwood showed signs of life in the third quarter, outscoring Muhlenberg 13-10, but the Muhls carried the way down the stretch.

Muhlenberg went 6-for-12 from the foul line in the fourth and was 12-for-20 in the game, while the Tigers finished 7-for-22. Fleetwood was 1-for-8 from the foul line and had cut the deficit to five in the fourth quarter.

No. 1 Berks Catholic 61, No. 8 Antietam 38

Senior Joshua McKoy scored a game-high 27 points to lead Berks Catholic to a win over Antietam on Monday night a Berks Boys Basketball Conference quarterfinal at Wolf Gymnasium.

McKoy scored 16 points in the third quarter after the Saints (20-2) came out of the halftime locker room with a 23-10 lead. He was 10-for-13 from the foul line and went 7-for-7 in the third quarter.

Berks Catholic led 46-25 after three quarters.

The Saints' defensive efforts were strong, as they limited the Mounts (12-11) to just two points in the first quarter and held a 19-2 lead after eight minutes. Junior Shawn Raffety scored a team-high 10 points and made two 3-pointers for Antietam.

Senior Parker Nein scored 19 points and made two 3-pointers for Berks Catholic.
