With the third pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans selected Derek Stingley Jr. to be their cornerback of the future.

Stingley was absolutely incredible as a lockdown corner during his freshman season in 2019 as LSU went on to win the National Championship. The Texans drafted him knowing that they could put him on an island with any receiver in the NFL and feel comfortable that he can win the matchup on any given Sunday.

Stingley was the first cornerback taken in the draft this year, which drew mixed reviews due to many people liking Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner from Cincinnati. I feel like it is another Ja'Marr Chase deal where recency bias comes into play.

Gardner was great last year and had a great career for the Bearcats, but if you go back and watch Stingley’s film from 2019, there was no better cornerback in any conference in the NCAA. He is that guy and he will prove that in Houston.

Here’s how the football world reacted to Houston’s decision to make Stingley the highest-drafted LSU defensive back in program history.
