RCTC women suffer rare loss

Feb. 14—WORTHINGTON — For the first time this season, the Rochester Community and Technical College women's basketball team lost to a non-scholarship junior college.

It was Minnesota West Community and Technical College that took it down, beating the shorthanded Yellowjackets 75-68 in Minnesota College Athletic Conference action Wednesday.

The decisive quarter was the second one, when MInnesota West outscored RCTC 21-11. The Yellowjackets entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation among Division III NJCAA teams.

RCTC had just seven players available in the game and two of them fouled out, Kara Goetzinger and Janae Bennett. Macaya Copeland led RCTC with 20 points and six assists. Bennett had 18 points and Jadae James had 14 points.

RCTC, which had been on a 10-game winning streak, slipped to 9-1 in the MCAC and 18-3 overall. It hadn't dropped a game since Dec. 29 when it fell to North Dakota State College of Science.

"West played well," RCTC coach Jason Bonde said. "Hopefully we learn from tonight and come back ready to go."
