Rays’ Wander Franco makes quite an impression with blast

PORT CHARLOTTE — Consensus top prospect Wander Franco’s first spring training homer was quite a blast.

Franco’s shot appeared to land on the roof of the office building beyond the boardwalk that is behind the rightfield fence at Charlotte Sports Park. But it may have carried even farther as a Rays staffer said the ball was not on the roof.

Franco, who turned 20 on Monday, was making his second start of the spring and his first at shortstop. He went 0-for-3 as the designated hitter on Tuesday.

Before the game, fellow prospect Vidal Brujan raved about Franco’s bat speed. “The fact that he’s so young and the way he bats and he’s got such quick hands, sometimes I think he’s not even human,” Brujan said via team interpreter Manny Navarro.
