Rays two-way prospect Brendan McKay has surgery
Rays two-way prospect Brendan McKay underwent thoracic outlet syndrome decompression surgery on Tuesday.
The Rays said McKay, who spent most of last season rehabbing from 2020 shoulder surgery, is expected to resume throwing in February.
Also, the Rays said McKay, who received a $7 million bonus as the No. 4 pick in the 2017 draft, will rehab as a pitcher.
McKay was limited to pitching 12-2/3 innings over seven minor-league games in 2021. He also played in six games as a designated hitter.
Tuesday’s surgery was performed by Dr. Greg Pearl in Dallas.
The Rays said McKay “is expected to resume throwing no later than early February with goal to be in a throwing and mound progression at start of spring training.”
McKay debuted in the majors in 2019 and played in 18 games.
