Ravens sign Robert Griffin III to one-year deal

Robert Griffin III is back in the NFL, signing a one-year deal with the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday.

"We're excited about it. We felt like we needed a No. 2 QB," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "I'm really feeling like we got a steal. I felt like he really wanted to be a Raven."

The Ravens were planning to address the position behind Joe Flacco, a mission general manager Ozzie Newsome shared at the NFL Scouting Combine in February.

Griffin, 28, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 draft. He recently worked out for the team at its Owings Mills, Md., facility and threw to wide receivers. From there, the Ravens opened contract negotiations.

Newsome said Griffin went to work out for a second team after throwing for the Ravens last week.

Josh Woodrum is the only other quarterback on the Ravens' roster. He was on the practice squad last season and hasn't played in a regular-season game.

Griffin will compete for the backup job behind Flacco, replacing unrestricted free agent Ryan Mallett.

Griffin last played in 2016 but lasted only five games with the Cleveland Browns before injuries set him back. Griffin was released by the Redskins in 2016 when Washington committed to Kirk Cousins as the starter.

Griffin was the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2012 and led the Redskins to the playoffs but he injured his knee in a postseason loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He went on to start 20 more games in Washington before Cousins took the reins.

As a rookie, Griffin passed for 3,200 yards and rushed for 815 yards in 15 games. He scored 27 total touchdowns that season.
