Rasheed Wallace says Russell Westbrook is best player in NBA originally appeared on NBC Sports Washington

Wednesday night's thriller in the play-in tournament between the Lakers and Warriors inspired a lot of debate on social media over who is the best player in today's NBA, with LeBron James and Stephen Curry squaring off on national television.

Some might argue it's one of them, some might say MVP candidate Nikola Jokic or back-to-back MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo or perhaps Sixers big man Joel Embiid.

Rasheed Wallace has another idea, which he proposed on ESPN's 'The Jump.' How about Russell Westbrook?

Wallace, who was drafted by the Wizards franchise back when they were the Bullets, thinks what Westbrook is doing for the Wizards right now makes him the top player in the league.

"Goodness gracious, this man is right now, I’ve gotta say, Russ is the best player in the NBA right now. There’s no disrespect to [Kevin Durant]. and Kyrie [Irving] and LeBron… no disrespect to Steph, I know he’s the scoring champ. But what this kid is doing," Wallace said.

Wallace was reacting to Westbrook's season numbers against the Pacers, which are fairly incredible: 27.3 points, 20.0 assists, 18.0 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. Westbrook led the NBA in assists per game and averaged a triple-double for the fourth time in his career.

The Wizards, though, topped out as the eight-seed in the East with a record that was four games under .500. Usually, players on the league's top teams get mentioned first in the discussion of which one is the best of all.

Wallace, though, is really buying into the Wizards with Westbrook and Bradley Beal alongside him.

"Russell Westbrook right now, man, is killing it. He’s killing it, man... That’s a hell of a one-two combination they’ve got right there," Wallace said.

Whether you agree with Wallace's big claim about Westbrook or not, it's hard to argue with the last point.
