The preseason recognition continues to roll in for IU redshirt senior cornerback Rashard Fant.

Fant was named to the 2017 Jim Thorpe Award watch list, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced Friday morning. The award is given annually to the best defensive back in college football.

It's Fant's third preseason honor received this week, adding to a list that also includes the 2017 AllState Good Works Team watch list and Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. He was one of five Thorpe Award nominees from the Big Ten conference.

Entering the 2017 season, Fant is the NCAA active career leader and Indiana's all-time leader with 48 passes defended and 44 pass breakups in 38 games. A second team All-Big Ten selection in 2016, the Atlanta native topped the Big Ten in pass breakups (17, tied for second nationally) and passes defended (20, third nationally).

The Thorpe award watch list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons can be added as the season goes on. The winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 7, 2017, on ESPN.
