Raptors reportedly sign DeAndre Bembry to 2-year contract
The Toronto Raptors have signed DeAndre’ Bembry to a two-year deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Bembry will be signed for the league minimum and the second season is not guaranteed, reports Blake Murphy of The Athletic.
The 26-year-old Bembry is a 6-foot-5 shooting guard who went 21st overall in the 2016 NBA draft. Bembry served as a reserve in his four seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, mostly playing the role of defensive specialist and occasional playmaker. His activity is his standout trait, as Bembry averaged 2.3 deflections and 1.3 steals in just 21 minutes per game last season.
Bembry needs to improve on the offensive end, particularly with his shooting. He is a career 59 percent free throw shooter and just 27 percent from deep, which severely limits his effectiveness. Without the ability to produce on offence, Bembry will likely serve as a depth piece for the Raptors, who happen to be flush with defensively-oriented guards.
Bembry averaged 5.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.9 assists last season.
