Ranking the best SEC football win percentages over the past five seasons
The 2023 college football season is nearly a week away, and before the SEC heads into an exciting campaign filled with must-watch storylines, it’s worth revisiting which programs are best equipped for success heading into the fall.
Saturday Down South was gracious enough to share the best SEC team win percentages over the course of the last five seasons. The cream of the crop should come as no surprise to even the most casual college football fanatic. Georgia, Alabama, and LSU each hold respective win percentages of over 75 percent, and each just so happens to be a contender for the SEC title in the fall.
But upon closer review, we have just one question for you: How about those Texas A&M Aggies? The Maroon and White, who enter the 2023 campaign with no shortage of cynics and skepticism, ranked firmly in the top five best winning percentages among SEC programs over the last five years.
Recency bias is a genuine trait, however, as Texas A&M’s 5-7 campaign (2-6 SEC) in 2022 has left a sour taste in the mouths of the team and the 12th Man. Of course, it’s offered ample fuel for the talking heads and critics throughout the offseason. But nonetheless, it will prove to be a temporary speedbump on what we expect to be an emphatic turnaround in College Station.
After all, numbers never lie, and the Aggies’ top-five win percentage over the last few seasons illustrates that this program can not only go head-to-head with the best but they most certainly can beat the best while they’re at it.
A few additional programs, such as Mississippi State and South Carolina, landed near the bottom of these rankings but appear to be on the upswing. Both teams are coming off respective nine-win seasons, and with two experienced quarterbacks in Will Rogers and Spencer Rattler returning for 2023, both programs have a chance to increase their historical win percentage in the fall.
