McDonald’s crispy chicken sandwiches have finally entered the fast-food chain into the Chicken Sandwich War. There are now three new menu items: the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, the Deluxe Crispy Chicken Sandwich and the Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich.
In the fall of 2019, a social media manager for Popeye’s Twitter account unwittingly ignited chaos by throwing down the gauntlet against Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich with a simple, “Y’all good?”
While Chick-fil-A claims to have “invented” the chicken sandwich, Popeye’s launched its now iconic fried chicken sandwich in August 2019, and employees were sent into overdrive to fulfill insane numbers of orders before it completely sold out.

On the sidelines sat McDonald’s, which quietly kept churning out burgers and nuggets instead of releasing its own chicken sandwich — until Feb. 24, 2021, almost two years later.
In late 2020 McDonald’s announced it had spent months tweaking the recipe for a soon-to-be-released fried chicken sandwich that would “live up” to the McDonald’s name.
As a lover of drama, I simply had to figure out a way to get involved. I ordered all three of the new McDonald’s sandwiches — having already tasted (and loved) the Popeye’s chicken sandwich and the Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich — to see if the wait was worth it.
Crispy Chicken Sandwich
I can’t believe McDonald’s spent 18 months crafting … this. The chicken and bread are fine, but it’s so bland. Where is the sauce?
The fact that McDonald’s spent so much time on chicken sandwiches only to come out with a basic one that doesn’t taste like anything is like how I procrastinate basic tasks and freak out until I actually sit down and do it and it turns out it only takes two minutes. Underwhelming.
Deluxe Crispy Chicken Sandwich
This sandwich is one step forward, two steps back.
What makes the Deluxe so deluxe is that it comes with sauce (yay!), tomatoes and lettuce. But no pickles.
Why did McDonald’s throw in tomatoes and lettuce? It’s not like other girls, I guess. At least there’s flavor!
Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich
OK, finally, this sandwich has the two simple things I demand in a chicken sandwich: sauce and pickles.
I like the spiciness (because there’s actual flavor) so I’d say this is my pick for best McDonald’s chicken sandwich. However, I don’t think Popeye’s has to be worried about defending its throne.
