The Rangers have hired Gord Murphy and Mike Kelly as assistants to head coach Gerard Gallant, The New York Post's Larry Brooks reported Monday.

Brooks added that the Rangers are looking for a third assistant to round out Gallant's group.

Murphy is getting promoted up to the Rangers staff after serving as the associate head coach of the Hartford Wolfpack -- the Rangers' top affiliate -- since 2019.

The former 14-year NHL defenseman has been an assistant with the Philadelphia Flyers, Florida Panthers and Columbus Blue Jackets in the past -- the latter of which he worked under Gallant.

Kelly served as an assistant to Gallant during the head coaches stints with the Panthers from 2014-2016 and Vegas from 2017-2020.

Per Brooks, Murphy will run the team's defense, while Kelly will serve as the team's "eye in the sky" for the first two periods of games before coming to the bench in the third.
