Rajon Rondo breaks right hand in Lakers win over Trail Blazers
Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton told reporters that point guard Rajon Rondo suffered a broken hand during Wednesday’s 126-117 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
“He hit his hand on the floor when he went to steal that ball,” Walton said of Rondo’s injury.
Rondo checked out of the game with 5:20 left in the fourth quarter. Walton expects Rondo to “be out a few weeks.”
ESPN reports that Rondo’s injury is to his right third metacarpal.
Rondo serves as backup point guard, veteran presence
Rondo has served as the primary backup at point guard after starting at the beginning of the season before serving a three-game suspension for an altercation with Houston Rockets point guard Chris Paul.
More time at point for Lonzo, LeBron?
Lonzo Ball has since taken over starting point guard duties and will likely see more playing time in Rondo’s absence.
LeBron James could see more time running point as well.
The news dampens a big night for the Lakers that saw James pass Wilt Chamberlain for fifth all time on the NBA’s scoring list. L.A. is also in the midst of a four-game winning streak, having won six of its last seven games to improve to 8-6 after a tumultuous start to the season.
Losing the backup point guard and a key veteran presence will be the next challenge for the Lakers to overcome.
