The Punisher season 2 on Netflix: all you need to know

From Digital Spy

We really enjoyed The Punisher season one. Sure, they made changes to the mythos, but they were the right changes.

In fact, it ended so well we'd be happy even if that was the last we saw of Frank Castle. But the show's been so successful among critics and fans alike that, as expected, Netflix officially renewed The Punisher for season two on December 12.

In fact, we've already started to get some info about the follow-up series, which we're scrawling into our War Journal in eager anticipation.

Here are all the latest rumours. Make sure to bookmark the page, as we'll be updating it whenever anything new comes in.

So far, only Daredevil has gone to a second season on Netflix (but Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist have all been confirmed for follow-up series), so it's the best guide for when Frank might come back.

Season one of Daredevil dropped on April 10, 2015. Season two landed on March 18, 2016. So, going by that pattern, we could be bingeing the further adventures of Frank Castle in October 2018. Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?

The official season two renewal didn't give any concrete details, other than it "is coming". Helpful.

Well, yes, it does sound too good to be true – especially as showrunner Steve Lightfoot hasn't yet decided who the villain's going to be.

"One of the villains I love is Barracuda [from Garth Ennis's Punisher MAX series]. I think he's great fun," Lightfoot has said. "I also really like O'Brien [also introduced in Punisher MAX]. I thought she was always really cool. There are so many great characters there. It's a very fun sandbox to play in."

So, that sounds like Jigsaw (so conclusively set up at the end of season one) might not make an extended appearance in season two. That would certainly fit with Daredevil's structure, which kept season one's villain (Kingpin) mostly on the bench for season two. He's already been confirmed to play a bigger role in season three.

Whoever the villain is, they'll have to pull Frank back into the fight, as the last time we saw him, he'd retired from his war having successfully avenged his family. But, as he's become pretty close to Micro's family, perhaps they'll be in the firing line during season two?

The Punisher had a very interesting marketing campaign that kept the release date under wraps until the last minute (which probably made it easier to shift following tragic real-world events), so your guess is as good as ours as to when it'll start up again.

But let's hope the season two campaign has a similar style – we enjoyed all the season one trailers.

Daredevil was entirely absent from Punisher season one. That's probably unsurprisinggiven the events of The Defenders, but it's still pretty weird that he didn't get so much as a mention – not even from Karen Page.

So, fans are keen to find out if the big red will put in an appearance in season two. There's no confirmation either way as yet, but it would be a nice circular narrative. Frank made his debut in Daredevil season two, so why not bring back Matt for The Punisher's second season?

The Punisher season 2 cast: Who will return?

Speaking of people who could be coming back, call us crazier than Jigsaw, but we think Jon Bernthal will probably return for season two. What can we say? We have a hunch.

We're less sure about Amber Rose Revah (who plays Dinah Madani on the show). Her character did survive the first run, but her plotline was relatively wrapped up. (It depends on which villain does feature – if it is Jigsaw, then she'll definitely return, thanks to her close relationship to Billy Russo).

It's probably safe to say Ebon Moss-Bachrach will return as Microchip, as he swiftly turned into a fan favourite as people binged the first season.

Expect a cameo from Ben Barnes' Billy Russo, though – as we've outlined above – he may not be the main villain, not before season three, anyway.
