Prep roundup: West opens season by peppering Ludington

Apr. 4—TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City West opened its varsity girls soccer season in impressive fashion Thursday, dominating the field against Ludington.

The Titans won 2-0, producing 32 shots on goal against the Orioles.

"It's been a while since I've seen a really controlled game — and that happened tonight," Titans head coach Ed Fantozzi said. "They're here to do well. You can see it. They did that tonight, in spades."

Sophomore Avery Plummer and freshman Nora Buttleman scored West's goals, with Buttleman scoring her first high school goal in her very first varsity game.

Claire Minor recorded her first varsity shutout with three saves in goal as the Titans had seven underclassmen among their 10 fielded players at times.

The West defense of Abby Carmien, Evelyn Duberg and Beatrice Rooks aided in the shutout. The Titans host Elks Rapids at 1 p.m. Saturday.

"This game was a battle," Vikings coach Joy Weitzel said. "We came out strong, connecting passes and getting the ball in dangerous areas. As the game progressed, it became more of a physical battle, so we lost a little bit of our energy going forward. Our midfielders Kyah Narovich and Sophie Clough put in great efforts to keep the pressure on their defense and us on the attack. Really proud of the team effort and the way we played together tonight."

"The team played well for our first game outside, considering the challenges of spring weather in northern Michigan," Harbor Springs coach Aaron Riley said. "We're young this year, but our freshmen and sophomores produced a lot of positive things tonight offensively. Boyne City played hard and showed their talent on the field, utilizing some of their key players from last season."
