Prep roundup: No. 3 BBE wrestlers go 2-0 in their triangular

Jan. 9—BELGRADE — The Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa wrestling team went 2-0 against a pair of Section 5A squads on Tuesday night.

Hosting a triangular at BBE High School, the Jaguars got wins against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (40-21) and Benson (42-6). The Fighting Saints beat the Braves in the other match, 56-12.

BBE is ranked third in the Class A state poll by The Guillotine, a statewide wrestling publication. KMS is outside the top 12 in the Lean and Mean rankings.

Noah Jensen (107), Noah Welte (114), Ryan Jensen (139), Maximus Hanson (172) and Carson Gilbert (215) each went 2-0 for the Jaguars.

BBE next competes at the Minnewaska Invitational beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Benson next hosts a quadrangular against Quad County, Red Lake County Central and West Central Area at 5 p.m. Thursday. KMS next hosts a varsity quadrangular against BOLD, Ortonville, Sauk Centre/Melrose at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Abby Knudsen had a 34.755 all-around score, including a 9.35 in the floor exercise, to lead New London-Spicer past Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at New London.

"We had a rough meet tonight," NLS head coach Cindy Jacobson said. "We had to count some falls and that is tough on a score."

The Wildcats' Ciera Anderson took second in the all-around with a 34.50, winning the vault with a 9.20 and the uneven parallel bars with an 8.525.

Kaitlyn Prehim took first on the balance beam with an 8.95.

NLS next hosts Dassel-Cokato at 6 p.m. Thursday at New London.

Melrose/Sauk Centre swam to the West Central Conference dual meet victory at Montevideo.

Montevideo got first-place finishes from Nolan Christopher in the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute, 56.93 seconds), Mickey Hess in the 50 free (23.35) and Austin Dunn in the 100 backstroke (57.20). The Thunder Hawks' 200 free relay team (1:34.45) and 400 free relay team (3:33.74) also took first.

Montevideo competes in the true team Section 3A meet Saturday at Willmar. Diving begins at 10:30 a.m. and swimming begins at 2 p.m.

St. Cloud Apollo improved its dual-meet record to 3-1 with the victory over Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield at Apollo.

First-place finishers for D-C/Litchfield included Will Carlson in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 21.67 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.11).

D-C/Litchfield competes in the true team Section 3A meet Saturday at Willmar. Diving begins at 10:30 a.m. and swimming begins at 2 p.m.
