Prep roundup: Good night for Benson/KMS

Feb. 5—BENSON — The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg gymnastics team swept the top three places in three of four events in its non-conference victory over Albany on Monday.

Benson/KMS, which is ranked No. 15 in Class A by the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Coaches Association, beat the Huskies, 136.200-125.800. Albany is in its first season as a varsity program.

Gwen Wilcox and Lexi Hoberg, both juniors, took the top two spots in the all-around for Benson/KMS. Wilcox was first with a total of 35.050 and Hoberg finished at 33.200.

Wilcox finished in first place in all events but the bars, where she placed second (7.850). She won titles on vault (9.150), beam (9.050) and floor (9.000).

Hoberg had one finish in the top three. She finished in second place on floor with a 8.550.

Also winning an event title for Benson/KMS was senior Elise Duncan. She earned a 8.100 on bars on the team's senior night.

Sophie Hilleren, a junior, had three top three finishes for Benson/KMS. She tied for second on vault (8.950) and was third on both beam (8.650) and floor (8.500).

Benson/KMS next competes in the West Central Conference championships at 5 p.m. Friday at Melrose.

Parker Welz and Anthony Fink each potted a pair of goals in River Lakes' victory against Becker/Big Lake at River Lakes Civic Arena.

The Stars, who are 3-3-2 in Section 5A games, got three-assist nights from Matthew Dotzler and Blake Schultz. Becker/Big Lake is 2-6-0 in section play.

Eric Paulson opened up the scoring for the Stars. Carson Cronquist made 16 saves between the pipes.

River Lakes next plays Alexandria at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Runestone Community Center.
