Prep roundup: Benson/KMS cruises past Redwood Valley

Jan. 22—BENSON — The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg gymnastics team scored a big victory over Redwood Valley on Monday night.

Benson/KMS scored 137.425. Redwood Valley had a 126.650.

Gwen Wilcox won the all-around scoring for Benson/KMS, accumulating 34.600 points. She also won the floor exercise with a 9.2000.

Also for Benson/KMS, Olivia Noble took first place in the vault with a 9.175. Sophie Hilleren was first on the balance beam for a 9.100.

Redwood Valley's Avery Wilson was first on the uneven parallel bars with an 8.600.

Benson/KMS next competes in the Class A State True Team meet at noon Saturday at the Worthington Learning Center & Gymnastics Facility.

Montevideo took 11th place at the Class A State True Team meet on Saturday in Minneapolis.

The Thunder Hawks' relay teams each had top 16 finishes at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.

The 400-yard freestyle relay team composed of Mickey Hess, Gavin Arends, Nolan Christopher and Austin Dunn swam to an eighth-place finish in 3 minutes, 28.39 seconds. The 200 freestyle relay team made up of Hayden Blom, Jaxon Wagner, Christopher and Arends tied for 10th place in 1:34.63. The 200 medley relay quartet of Dunn, Wagner, Hess and Blom took 11th place in 1:46.55.

Montevideo had five individuals who swam to top-16 finishes.

Dunn took eighth in the 100 backstroke (58.58) and 16th in the 100 butterfly (59.48). Christopher placed 10th in the 200 freestyle (1:55.01). Arends was 11th in the 1-meter diving competition (281.25) and 15th in the 50 freestyle (23.46). Hess finished 13th in both the 50 freestyle (23.27) and 100 freestyle (51.27). Tyson Brandt had a 13th place finish in 1-meter diving (247.65).

Montevideo next swims at Princeton in a dual at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
