Prep hoops: Sigourney surges past Pekin in second half

Jan. 9—PEKIN — McKinley Chittick scored a game-high 13 points on Saturday, leading a balanced effort on both ends of the court for the Sigourney girls basketball team in a 49-28 win over Pekin in the annual battle on the hardwood of Keokuk County rivals.

Ava Fisch added 12 points for Sigourney, sinking four shots from 3-point range. Carly Goodwin added 10 points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals as the Savages pulled away in the second half, outscoring Pekin 16-0 in the third quarter.

Sigourney's defense led the way to a 52-28 South Iowa Cedar League win on Friday, forcing the Bears into 28 turnovers while collecting 22 steals. Josephine Moore scored 16 points for the Savages in the SICL win while Goodwin added 15 points and four assists.

Anna Hadley came within a rebound of producing a double-double for Pekin on Saturday, scoring a team-high 11 points while grabbing nine rebounds against the Savages. The Panthers returned from the holiday break on Friday, falling 41-35 at WACO in Southeast Iowa Superconference north division play with 10 points from Abby Guise leading the way.

Sigourney (8-4, 4-4 SICL) hosts HLV on Friday. Pekin (4-7, 4-5 SEI north) heads to Wapello on Thursday night.

Davis County 61, Central Decatur 41

LEON — Reese Humphrey led the way to a non-conference road win on Saturday over the Cardinals, scoring a game-high 22 points as the Mustangs bounced back after suffering a 15th-ranked South Central Conference home loss to Chariton.

Humphrey and Laynee Moore each scored 10 points for the Mustangs on Friday against the Chargers. Tatyana Allen-Winston racked up 23 points and 13 rebounds for Chariton in a 64-43 win over Davis County, staying one game behind seventh-ranked (2A) EBF in the SCC standings.

Davis County (5-7, 3-4 SCC) heads to No. 7 (2A) EBF on Friday.

Mount Pleasant 51, Fairfield 50 (OT)

MOUNT PLEASANT — Abby Carthey scored a buzzer-beating jumper in overtime, lifting the Panthers to a thrilling Southeast Conference win over the Trojans.

Savannah Hollander led Fairfield with a game-high 20 points in Friday's contest. Briana Steele and Emma Metcalf each added 10 points for the Trojans in the loss.

Fairfield (2-9, 0-5 Southeast) hosts Fort Madison on Friday.

Knoxville 56, Albia 39

KNOXVILLE — Brittany Bacorn produced a 21-point, 18-rebound double-double for the Panthers in a South Central Conference win over the Lady Dees.

Janelle Clark led Albia with eight points. Olivia Sheffield added seven points in the contest.

Albia (3-7, 2-5 SCC) steps out of conference play on Thursday at Newton.

Mediapolis 57, Van Buren County 33

KEOSAUQUA — Haley Steffener scored 17 points while dishing out four assists for the Bullettes in a Southeast Iowa Superconference south division win over the Warriors

Ivy Davidson led Van Buren County with 14 points in the loss. The Warriors never recovered after being shutout by Mediapolis, 20-0, in the opening quarter.

Van Buren County (2-8, 1-6 SEI south) heads to No. 15 (1A) Burlington-Notre Dame on Friday. On Saturday, the Warriors head to Bloomfield to face Davis County in the Fox River Rivalry.

Cainsville 45, Moulton-Udell 23

CAINSVILLE, MO — Miah Burgher led the Eagles with 12 points while Rachel Ogden pulled in 15 rebounds in a non-conference road loss in an Iowa-Missouri border battle.

Moulton-Udell (0-10) returns to Bluegrass Conference play on Thursday at Lamoni.


Sigourney 53, Pekin 45

PEKIN — Solon Yates led a balanced effort for the Sigourney boys basketball team, scoring 16 points as the Savages scorched the nets in the second half scoring 29 points in the third quarter to pull away for a win over the Panthers.

Yates added a game-high 14 points just 24 hours earlier in Sigourney's 52-39 South Iowa Cedar League win at BGM on Friday. Isaac Bruns added a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double while Ike Molyneux scored 13 points for the Savages.

Jaedon Wolver led Pekin on Saturday with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds against the Savages. Will Adam led the Panthers on Friday in a 53-31 Southeast Iowa Superconference north division loss at WACO.

Sigourney (6-5, 4-5 SICL) heads to Colfax-Mingo on Thursday while Pekin (5-6, 5-3 SEI north) heads to Wapello in two games that were postponed on Tuesday due to winter weather.

Moulton-Udell 56, Cainsville 45

CAINSVILLE, MO — Luca Nobis led the Eagles with 23 points in a non-conference road win across the border in Missouri. The win gives Moulton-Udell the most wins in a single season since finishing 9-10 in 2018.

Cameron Swarts added 15 points and matched Nobis with a team-leading four steals. Braydin Shaffer added 12 points and dished out a team-leading four assists.

Moulton-Udell (5-3) has won three games in a row. The Eagles return to Bluegrass Conference play on Thursday at Lamoni.

Central Decatur 65, Davis County 56

LEON — Paxon Applegate scored a game-high 22 points for the Cardinals, leading a fourth-quarter comeback as Central Decatur outscored the Mustangs 27-10 in the fourth quarter to rally for a non-conference home win on Saturday.

Cason Young led Davis County with 15 points on Saturday. Hayden Utt and Carter Will each scored 11 points for the Mustangs.

Playing short-handed, the Mustangs struggled late on Friday at Chariton dropping an 80-70 South Central Conference contest. Mason Smith scored a game-high 31 points, helping Chariton put the game away by outscoring Davis County 22-15 in the fourth quarter.

Davis County (1-8, 1-6 SCC) heads to conference co-leader Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont on Friday.

Clarke 90, Cardinal 35

ELDON — Jack Cooley put together an incredible effort on Friday against the Comets, scoring a school-record 50 points while adding 15 rebounds for the Indians in a South Central Conference win.

Cardinal (0-10, 0-7 SCC) hosts Centerville on Friday.

Mount Pleasant 64, Fairfield 43

MOUNT PLEASANT — Payton Hagans led the Panthers with 25 points and five assists in a Southeast Conference win over the Trojans on Friday.

Noah Lange posted a double-double for Mount Pleasant, scoring 14 points while pulling in 10 rebounds. Nate Stroud added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Eli Zillman led Fairfield with 17 points in the contest. Riley Perkins added 11 points and a team-high five assists.

Fairfield (1-10, 0-5 Southeast) hosts Fort Madison on Friday.

Mediapolis 78, Van Buren County 23

KEOSAUQUA — Max Griffin scored 18 points, added seven rebounds and seven assists as the Bulldogs pulled away in the first half in a Southeast Iowa Superconference south division win over the Warriors.

Van Buren County (2-8, 1-7 SEI south) heads to Burlington-Notre Dame on Friday.
